I’ve been struggling for years to find a way around what I now refer to as the Follow Through Catch-22.
Here’s the Follow Through Catch-22 in a nutshell:
Although you can dramatically amplify your follow through ability by using follow through strategies, you need some natural follow through ability – let’s call it raw willpower — to use follow through strategies.
The bottom line is that unless/until you have enough raw willpower to make yourself use follow through strategies, you’ll be deprived of the truly impressive benefits that people who make a practice of using follow through strategies routinely enjoy.
Investing in follow through
An analogy may help put the Follow Through Catch-22 in perspective.
Suppose I offered you a no-risk investment opportunity. If you give me $1,000 in cash today, I guarantee I’ll give you $100,000 in cash tomorrow. Obviously, that would amount to a huge return on your investment. Yet, if you can’t come up with the $1,000 required to take advantage of this incredible offer, you’d be out of luck.
Using follow through strategies is like an extraordinary investment opportunity. It takes a relatively small amount of natural follow through ability – raw willpower — to make yourself use follow through strategies. If you invest the small amount of willpower it takes to use follow through strategies, you’ll be rewarded with an enormous increase in follow through ability.
The problem, of course, is that if you don’t have enough willpower to take advantage of this generous investment opportunity, you’ll miss out on the rewards.
Still no real solution, but …
I’ve tried and tried and tried, but I have yet to find a way around the Follow Through Catch-22. Frankly, I wish there was a way I could make you make yourself use follow through strategies, but there isn’t.
So, I have no choice but to say that if you don’t have enough raw willpower to invest in using follow through strategies, (gulp) I can’t help you. To be clear, I mean no criticism by this except of myself for failing so far to come up with a solution.
If and when you’re ready and able to make the small investment of raw willpower it takes to use follow through strategies, I’ll be ready and able to see to it that you get a huge return on your investment. In the meantime, I’m afraid that you’re largely on your own. The best I can do is give your raw willpower a little push by reminding you that people who do make a practice of using follow through strategies enjoy being more effective, more successful, and more satisfied.
